Cross Diamond
The Red Cross Diamond
is a South African stone that weighs 205.07 carats. It is
a vivid diamond that is big and square-shaped. The diamond
was presented on behalf of the Order of St. John and the
British Red Cross Society as a gift to a London art sale
that took place in 1918. The group of dealing firms who
presented the Red Cross Diamond had also previously introduced
the De Beers Diamond. Not only is the Red Cross Diamond
luminous in artificial light, but it also illuminates absorbed
light rays in the dark. The diamond is canary yellow and
contains many facets. The name of the Red Cross Diamond
is also significant because the diamond contains a Maltese
Cross, a cross with four equal arms, in the top facet. The
first man to purchase the diamond made a high bid and vowed
to keep the diamond for one month only. He then returned
it to the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St.
John to be sold again to increase the funds. The diamond
has been in many sales including one in Tokyo, Geneva, and
Switzerland. The present owner of the Red Cross Diamond
is unknown.
